A world of handcrafted characters, furniture, and accessories with a language all its own — crowns, gold, cigarettes, black-and-white patterns, eyelashes, and attitude. Designed in Germany and created by hand around the world, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Behind it all is the vision of Thomas "Tom" Hoffmann, who believed that art belongs at the heart of everyday life.
It began with a single brushstroke in the autumn of 2001 — and grew into a universe of characters collected around the world.
1988
the foundation
Tom's Company was founded by Thomas Hoffmann and Arno Müller in 1988 in Saarbrücken, near the French border. In its early years, the company built its reputation by importing handcrafted furniture from Asia and working closely with artisans and ateliers across the continent. Through this work, Tom developed the deep relationships with craftspeople that would later become central to everything Tom's stands for.

2001
the spark
The autumn of 2001 marked a turning point. Like much of the world, Thomas Hoffmann watched the events of September 11 with a stillness that lasted weeks. His answer to that darkness was the one most natural to him — he began to paint in the most vivid colours he could find. The first Tom's Drag figures were created during this period as a direct response to 9/11: a way to bring a little joy back to friends and family. Hand-painted with deliberate care and enriched with crowns, jewellery, gold leaf and colourful patterns, they were not made for sale — they were gifts. The response was immediate, and word spread among collectors, designers and friends of friends until demand grew well beyond Tom's original circle.

2002
the birth of a brand
In 2002, Tom's Drag was officially launched as a brand. What had begun as a series of personal gifts had become a defined body of work — with its own name, its own visual language, and a rapidly growing audience. From the very beginning, it was different: the figures did not behave like decoration. They had names. They had attitude. They had personality. Designed in Germany, each one was brought to life by skilled artisans around the world.

the 2000s
a universe takes shape
Over the decade Tom developed a visual language that would become unmistakable: gold and silver leaf, black-and-white patterns, the recurring crown, the eyelashes that gave every figure its expression — and the small, defiant touches that became signatures in themselves: the golden boots every character stands in, and the cheeky cigarette. Nothing was accidental — every element served the same idea, that beauty does not need to be quiet to be serious. The cast grew alongside the language, each character arriving with its own posture and personality, until Tom's Drag had found its way into galleries, boutiques, hotels and private collections across Europe — almost entirely through word of mouth.

the 2010s
recognition and loss
In 2012, Thomas Hoffmann passed away unexpectedly on the island of Bali — the place where so many of his figures had been brought to life by the skilled artisans he had worked with for years. In every sense, he was at the heart of the world he had created. Arno Müller took on the responsibility of carrying the brand forward. Under his stewardship, its spirit remained intact: the same workshops, the same artisans, and the same commitment to individually hand-painted characters.

the 2020s
a new era
The 2020s brought a deliberate evolution — sharper storytelling, international growth and new product development. Tom's began to step more confidently into the role it had long quietly held: a collectible design brand with a cultural footprint of its own. The first limited editions arrived, each individually numbered and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

2026
simply Tom's
In 2026, the brand takes its clearest step yet: Tom's Drag becomes simply Tom's. “Drag” belonged to an earlier era, when the characters still needed a label to explain their world. Today, they speak for themselves, and Tom's no longer needs to explain itself. The visual language remains. The attitude remains. The character remains. Only the framework evolves.

twenty-five years of Tom's
Twenty-five years of hand-painted figures. Twenty-five years of bringing personality and joy into homes. Twenty-five years of a slightly extravagant idea that began with a single brushstroke: that a room becomes more itself when something in it has the courage to wear a crown.

Our values
what we stand for
Character, joy, craftsmanship and collectability — the four things we will not compromise.
every room needs a character
Our pieces are never simply objects — they are characters, each with a name, a story and a specific attitude. Personality and point of view come first; decoration follows.
joy can be a form of art
Beauty does not need to be quiet to be taken seriously. Our work is made to lift a room — and uplift the person in it — unapologetically.
made entirely by hand
Artisans we have been working with for years cast, paint and sign every piece by hand. Craftsmanship is not simply a detail of what we do — it is at the heart of everything we create. Every piece is one of a kind.
desirable, not everywhere
We choose desirability over widespread availability. A distinctive signature style, numbered editions and lasting quality make every piece something to keep — and collect.
A room becomes more itself when something in it has the courage to wear a crown.
