Monkey Charly
Charly comes in three versions, each with a well-practised response to trouble. One covers his ears, one closes off the view and one keeps a firm hand over his mouth. Choose the principle that suits you, or place all three together and assemble a committee with no useful opinion whatsoever. Each Charly is cast, released, trimmed and sanded by hand before the colour begins. His costume is painted in layers, with curling ornament and black-and-white checks drawn freehand across the sleeves and body. The cap is finished separately, and the face is worked around the gesture that gives each version its character. The brush never follows precisely the same route twice, so no two Charlys are identical. He works on a bookshelf, a hallway console or the corner of a desk — anywhere a little discretion might be useful. A single Charly keeps his own counsel. The three together turn a quiet surface into a conversation, despite having agreed not to hear, see or discuss any of it. Place them where their hands and expressions remain visible; that is where the joke lives.

Sketched, carved, cast, painted, gilded, finished — six steps and many pairs of hands before a character is done. Layer upon layer of vivid colour laid down by artisans who have spent years learning the brushwork. No two are ever exactly alike; the hand is always visible.
