Ballo in maschera La Contessa
La Contessa arrives behind a feathered mask, one hand raised and the other settled at her waist. The striped dress, red shoes and composed smile make the gesture look less like a greeting than a decision about who may approach. She has dressed for a masked ball and expects the room to catch up.Each La Contessa is cast in marble resin, released, trimmed and sanded by hand. Coral, green, blue and black-and-white patterns are painted in layers across the full skirt and fitted bodice, with every line drawn freehand. The face, jewellery, mask, feathers and shoes are finished carefully at the end. The brush never repeats itself precisely, so no two La Contessa figures are identical. She belongs on a sideboard, console or generous shelf where the full costume remains visible. Pair her with Il Conte for a formal procession, or place her alone at the centre of a surface and let the raised hand set the terms. La Contessa is intended for indoor decoration. The carnival is optional. Standards of dress, judging by the expression, are not.
