Arlecchino is an acrobat and a tealight holder, and treats neither job as secondary. Balanced on one leg, the other extended straight upwards, the character carries a shallow dish with the calm precision of someone who has rehearsed this entrance for years. Unlit, the pose is improbable. With a flame above it, the whole performance makes sense.The figure is cast, released, trimmed and sanded by hand, then painted in layers from the supporting foot to the raised dish. Pink, green, blue and orange sections follow the curves of the body, while black-and-white patterning is drawn freehand along the extended leg. The arrangement changes subtly with every brush, so no two Arlecchinos are identical.Place Arlecchino on a dining table, mantelpiece or sideboard where the full vertical line can be seen. One creates a clear pool of evening light; a pair gives the table its own small circus. Use a tealight of the intended size, keep the flame clear of the painted figure and never leave it unattended. Allow wax to cool before removing it, then use a dry cloth only. The balance may look precarious. The character has never doubted it.
